Lotus Notes was first created back in 1989. It is a collaborative software suite and email client that is used to store and organize personal data and send, receive and store emails. Lotus Notes includes a number of features and capabilities, including email capabilities, contact information (such as names, addresses and numbers) instant messaging, file transfers and more. Lotus notes sic commonly used when a number of different people need to work on the same file, they can use the software to discuss (through instant messages or chat rooms) or to post on discussion forums.
In 2012 Lotus Notes was changed to IBM Notes after IBM dropped the Lotus brand name which they had used since acquiring the software in 1995. In 2008, IBM Notes released XPages, an advanced technology that allows users to display and create Lotus Notes files on any platform, including those offered by Smartphones and Tablet computing devices.
There were over nine full editions of Lotus Notes/IBM Notes (with many expansions, add-ons and fixes released along the way) since its initial release way back in 1989.
