Interview with the developer of ‘WinGuard Pro’– Paul Hines
By: Mike Milhouse
From time to time we select a software we like and interview the developer or team behind it. It allows our users to grasp the qualities of the software and the developer/team. Please welcome Paul Hines who will talk about WinGuard.
What is your title/job description?
How did you come to creating this software?
I created WinGuard Pro in 1999, when security policies in Windows 95 / 98 was unavailable to users.
I wanted a simple way to add a password to a Windows shortcut to prevent the program from opening without the correct credits.
I couldn't believe no such solution was present, a simple feature, no where to be found.
I was a beginner in VIsual Basic 4 at the time.
I learnt about the Windows API and the functions I could use to simulate locking an application down to accept password entry.
Many hours, weeks, password and I eventually came up with the solution and final product, which was featured on PC PRO in the UK.
Now in 2014 WinGuard Pro is upgraded to the newest VB Language Runtime, utilizing the MS .NET Framework 2.0.
What are the key benefits of the software compare with alternatives?
Lock any application with a Password.
Where do you see the software 2 years from now?
The software will continue as is, being updated and may add some new features.
Thanks a lot Paul!
