Shazam is the first-ever app that could “listen” to music and recognize the song and the artist. After it was released, many copycat apps followed, but Shazam is still one of the most popular options today.
At first, the app was only able to recognize the song and the artist. But since it appeared, Shazam was updated many times, and it can provide additional information about the media it can recognize.
It works by using the smartphone’s microphone for hearing the media that you’re playing to recognize it. So, for example, when someone hears a song that they like but don’t know which song it is, they can turn on Shazam, and the app will tell them.
But the app can now recognize TV shows, movies, or even YouTube clips. While displaying the song, it can also show real-time lyrics to sing along, give suggestions of similar artists or songs, and show music videos.
Even when you’re offline, Shazam can make a digital footprint of the media you are playing. The next time when you go online, the app will match this footprint with its database.
