An Intriguing Take on GPS with a Social Aspect

Plenty of people probably rely on Google Maps to get around. Have we all been spoiled? Maybe, maybe not. Millions of us still rely on TomTom or otherwise for digital mapping, too. But how many times have these programs gotten things seriously wrong? To its credit, Waze appears to want to change all that.

While Waze’s maps are based on GPS standards, it also benefits from being a community-driven software. That makes things particularly interesting when it comes to getting up to date information on what lies ahead. Waze has this fantastic way of letting users around you update you on traffic, diversions and much more. While the thought of getting social with your GPS may sound a bit corny, it works very well indeed.

One of the most attractive features of Waze is the fact that you can connect to ‘friends.’ This means that provided you are connected with another user, you can see where they are on your local map. That might not appeal to everyone but it’s still a neat little feature that will help some drivers in a fix.

Waze appears to have an emergent following and it’s not hard to understand why. The app is very easy to get to grips with, putting it on a similar level to Google Maps. Does it do enough to replace GMaps altogether? Possibly, but that all depends on your needs from an onboard GPS. The functionality is inspiring for the future of satellite navigation and it’s well worth having on your device in any case.

Waze leads with the idea of saving drivers from traffic and fuel consumption. It certainly does this to an extent but your own use may vary. For regular drivers, it may well be a great little asset to your daily commutes. Give it a try!
